July 31, 2007 - Fishing in Kodiak at last, the weather cleared just enuf for us to get on a small float plane and fly to Kodiak National wildlife refuge. a wonderfully beautiful Kodiak below, with lush green, waterfalls, pristine lakes with bald eagles, bears, and whales all over. Stopped at Frazier lake for bear viewing - about 6-8 bears and cubs fishing in the salmon-rich lake. Dense fog came back on our flight back, but made back into town safe and happy :). I have many bear photos to process, I wish the light had been better, but can't complain !
July 30, 2007 - Sunset on Shelikof Strait Enroute to Kodiak Island on MV Tustumena - last day on the ferry. Eagles of Unalaska coming up here
July 29, 2007 - Sunset at Sandpoint, AK Back on MV Tustumena enroute to Kodiak Island. Sunsets happen at around 11.30 pm or so, but the light starts to change to beautiful evening light by around 9.30-10 pm.
July 28, 2007 - Unalaska at last ! Docked at Unalaska/Dutch Harbor port @ 8.30am. Took a taxi cab with Susan who showed us all the hotspots of Unalaska. Hundreds of bald eagles here. Bald eagles on the beach, at the dumpster, on every roof-top, cemetery, church spire, and foliage atop the mountains. I shot 4GB worth of bald eagles, but the slow internet on the Tusty prevents me from sharing my cachet with you. Patience, my friends ! Soon there will be a gallery of bald eagles. I very highly recommend Unalaska to all smugmuggers esp the birders ! Bald Eagle perched on cross @USS Northwestern Memorial, a picturesque hillside memorial along the bay.
July 27, 2007 - MV Tustumena ( Trusty Tusty ) docks at False Pass, AK. Itinerary : Kodiak, Chignik, Sand Point, Cold Bay, False Pass, Akutan, Unalaska - the chain of Aluetian Islands with dormant volcanoes,mountains rising out of the ocean,and bald eagles by the dozen.
July 26, 2007 - Juvenile bald eagle in Chignik, AK First stop on the MV Tustumena enroute to Dutch Harbor (Unalaska), AK
July 25, 2007 - Finback whale in Shelikof Strait - 1st day of the cruise from Kodiak Island to Dutch Harbor (Unalaska).
July 24, 2007 - Kodiak Island We were to take a float plane ride today, but due to washed out conditions, rain, poor visibility, our trip postponed to later in the week. Tomorrow we take the Alaska marine highway ship Tustumena to Dutch Harbor and back over a week's time. Hopefully the weather changes to some nice blue skies :) Hoping to see some whales and such on the way
July 23, 2007 - Eklutna lake - the view after a steep 2.6 mile ascent on the Twin Peaks Trail, Chugach State Park, AK. Posted @ 4.00 am in Anchorage Airport, on the way to Kodiak Island for a bear-viewing float plane ride; bear with me :)
